Nuclear structure of light Au isotopes

Isotopes 177Au, 179Au were studied by means of in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy. Experiments have been performed at the University of Jyvaskyla (Finland). Unexpectedly strong mixing between states associated with weakly and strongly-deformed configurations was observed. This suggest presence of previously unknown nucleonic configuration in extremely neutron-deficient nuclei. In addition to that, previously unknown isomeric states (long-lived excited states) were discovered. They offer an unique insight in the deformation, both axial and triaxial. On the basis of these datasets, new experiment has been proposed to the Program Advisory Committee of the University of Jyvaskyla, which has been approved. With the new experimental concept, high statistics data will be collected.
