Exploring the QCD Phase Diagram at RHIC

Experiments with colliding heavy ions at the top energy of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have confirmed the existence of a new state of matter, the strongly-interacting Quark-Gluon Plasma (sQGP). Since beam energy and baryo-chemical potential are closely correlated, we can cover a wide range of the QCD phase diagram (20 <  μB < 420 MeV) by lowering the RHIC beam energy from 200 GeV down to about 8 GeV.

I will discuss the recent results from the STAR experiment at RHIC, especially those from the first phase of the RHIC Beam Energy Scan program. In addition, an overview of the STAR physics program in the near future will be presented.
