Silicon photonics: from subwavelength structures to applications in optical communications, biosensing and spectroscopy

Recent advances in silicon photonics research at the National Research Council of Canada will be reviewed. Various new types of microphotonic devices exploiting subwavelength nanostructures will be presented, including planar waveguide circuits operating at telecom wavelengths. Emerging applications in optical interconnects, microsatellite-based spectroscopy, and biological sensing will be discussed.
